Monthly Archives: November 2012

I’m off to Japan very soon. A friend invited me to accompany her on a ‘wild impromptu expedition idea’, or more specifically, to a festival of contemporary art on the most southerly island of Kyushu where she is giving a presentation. At first I reluctantly turned the idea down as I am in the middle of the Autumn term and with pressing family concerns as well. She emailed back: Carpe Diem. Now, Carpe Diem is a phrase that has lived in my head ever since I saw that Robin Williams film, I forget the name but it was inspiring at the time. So I did Seize the Day; I jumped, rearranged everything, and now can hardly believe I’m going. It’s quite unlikely I will be blogging from there, but will most certainly come back with a tale or two to tell. In the meantime, here are some tasters: links to places and events we will be visiting..

First, the ‘Mixed Bathing World’ art event at which we are an official delegation. Next, the residency ideas that we will be exploring. Then another thing that decided me to go: a video of papermaking grandmothers.

(Incidentally, this is where we found the phrase ‘when you see a shrine, turn left’. That was in the instructions on how to find the papermakers).  And lastly, for now, when we are in Nagasaki we will be staying in a Kimono Guest House.

Have a look.
