ABCD is Artists Book Club Dove, a group of people who meet once a month at the Printroom, Dove Studios, to make books, share ideas, discoveries and lunch. The idea is that two members, between them, run two consecutive sessions on a theme of their choosing.

The first two sessions were held on November 5th and December 10th, 2011 by Karen Young and Janine Barchard and covered ‘hanging books’, which broadly speaking work like types of window blinds, ie the Venetian Blind and the Roman Blind.

The Venetian Blind looked, from the back, like this:

Here is a Venetian blind book being tied together by Pat Wolseley:

and here is the finished book:

Judith Staines made a Venetian blind book using plant labels from a garden centre:

Finally, a book by Nina Gronw-Lewis:

The construction of the Roman Blind book is demonstrated by Karen Young:

January 28th and February 25th was the turn of Caroline Mornement and Nina Gronw-Lewis with ‘Containers’: ways of containing books and other things.

In the January session we made concertina containers:

The second session of Containers dealt with a book container for the concertina container OR for any other book that needed extra protection.

Judith Staines’ container holds books from her family archive that have an Indian theme:

The March session was run by Rowena Pearce and Pat Wolseley: this initial session was concerned with making monoprints for an eventual book next time.

Both Pat and Rowena were working with botanical forms:

Some prints drying on the line:

April 6 2013. ABCD meeting at the Dove on the subject of ‘FOUND’

Four people came with both finished books and drafts.

Judith Staines made a large fold book out of paste papers: as the pages are turned the word ‘FOUND’ slowly appears

Caroline Mornement made a prototype tunnel book about her experience of ‘finding’ herself as a young person

15.04.2015 It occurs to me, since I haven’t updated this page since 2013 during which time, however, a lot has happened with ABCD, to refer you to Ama Boltons Blog, where you will find all the missing bits. Also, as you can see from the above, this page has completely ‘misbehaved’ and I don’t seem to be able to get it back in line. I’ve given up: life is too short, and you’ll get the general drift anyway.
